Camping gear chaos is not a personality trait. It is just a system that does not exist yet.
You do not need a Pinterest garage makeover. You need two things:
A category system
A way to see what you actually own
Step 1: Pick categories that match how you pack
These categories work for most campers:
Shelter
Sleep
Cooking
Water
Lighting
Clothing
Safety
Comfort
Tools and repair
If you have special styles of camping, add a category for it:
Winter gear
Backpacking-only
RV-only
Group gear
Step 2: Store by category, not by “where it fits”
The easiest system:
One bin per category
Label the bin clearly
Keep the bin list consistent with your packing list categories
Step 3: Create a “trip-ready” mini kit
Make one small bin or bag that always stays packed:
First aid
Headlamp
Lighter
Trash bags
Toilet kit
Bug spray
Sunscreen
This saves you every time you take a quick weekend trip.
Step 4: Make your gear visible
This is the step people skip.
If you cannot see what you own, you will rebuy it.
Quick options:
A simple phone photo of each bin’s contents
A notes app list by category
Or a gear inventory inside The Complete Camping App (My Gear Closet), so you can add your actual items to your packing list
Step 5: Do a seasonal reset
Twice a year, do a 20 minute reset:
Check batteries
Restock first aid
Refill fuel if needed
Wash and dry anything that got put away damp (we have all done it)
If you want the simplest version of this:
Use the same categories for home storage and packing lists. When the labels match, packing gets fast.
